My Brief Book Reviews

I have completely read these books and so I think that they are really good - unless I have made comments otherwise. (Other opinions may vary!)

Seize the Day

by Saul Bellow

Finally got to read a Bellow book. It's not very long. It's about a middle-aged guy who's "down on his luck" and is mainly just looking for some approval or positive encouragement from his father. I like the ending because it's not the same ol' same old.

The Miracle of Castel di Sangro

by Joe McGinniss

It's a story about a journalist who goes to a small town in Italy and follows an overachieving football/soccer team for nine months. The book was nicely written and I kept want to know what happened next. I learned a bit about how things "work" in Italy. However the writer increasingly becomes more arrogant about his "wonderful" insights about how things "should" be done - to the highest reaches of the club - which was amusing throughout the book until at the end he become the ugliest American despite, one after another, the players try to talk to him about how things are done in Italy. He burns all his bridges behind him - and for what purpose? To show everyone how morally superior he is - changing nothing. Fun read - until the end.
