My Brief Book Reviews

I have completely read these books and so I think that they are really good - unless I have made comments otherwise. (Other opinions may vary!)

Joseph Cornell

by Diane Waldman

Joseph Cornell is a relatively famous artist (within the art world) who did small art construction boxes. This is a nice big picture book – the kind that I love.

The Beatles - The Biography

By Bob Spitz

A massive tome - 850 pages! Very complete and very well written. I personally skipped most of their early childhoods and read mostly after John, Paul and George met. I do wonder on how a lot of these people remember so clearly what happened. You try and remember exactly how a conversation went one month ago.

The Exquisite Corpse

About the Black Dahlia murder in LA in 1947 and the surrealists.

In The Milieu of Vermeer

By Jonathan Mathias

This is supposed to be the best book about Johannes Vermeer the painter. Frankly, what is known about him could probably fit in a couple of pages. The rest is about family (descendants and ancestors), friends, relatives and the people around him as well as what life was like during his lifetime. Very informative but pretty dry. I usually read a book from cover to cover but this is one of the very few that I didn’t. I wasn’t really interested in his wife’s family.
